Another Bridal Fashion Week has arrived with all the bridal trends! We want to take a moment and reflect on the three-day virtual event. This year confirmed that wedding celebrations aren’t all about the dress, but fashion is more prominent than ever before.

First, we genuinely acknowledge how designers have adapted to the current times, specifically with the pre-recorded videos they worked to debut their collections. Each footage subserved as a bridal mini-movie. The artists showcased their brand’s character and ethos—an inside look we typically don’t get to see with routine runways.

As for the trends, traditional and non-traditional both ruled the virtual runways. Even though 2020 highlighted the “new-age” brides, designers appeared optimistic about the future of weddings.

Many produced various repetitions of the “modern ball gown” for brides who still desire a princess moment on their big day. We also saw a wave of mini dresses (as expected!) and bridal separates. Feathers, florals, and sexy silhouettes were prominent trends that were noticeable everywhere the entire week.

The Great Gatsby Era

We have all seen it, and we have all loved it. From satin sheathings, drop-waists, and body-skimming profiles, to pearls and crystal-encrusted bows, the Gatsby Era was all the heat the year Baz Luhrmann’s version hit the big screen.

But the era known for epic parties is, reasonably, getting a reboot. After all, the roaring ’20s reflected the Spanish Flu; it’s no wonder that a resurgence of this era’s best looks would follow the disappointments of 2020 into the bridal fashion industry. This look articulates our longing for party dressing with a modern twist.

This trend is humble yet luxurious, whether you use it for the ceremony, rehearsal dinner, after-party, or other wedding-related events in-between.

Bold and Playful

This trend goes ahead with florals and bursts of color. Arising from 2020, 2021 is all about daring and playful prints that make us beam, done in chic, fashionable ways. Whether it’s the all-over graphic blooms or characterizing designs a la Monique Lhuillier’s Lily of the Valley, Miu Miu’s cat-c0vered gown, or an Alexander McQueen’s vintage fashion sketched dress, this is for the bride who intends to throw her heeds to the wind once stay at home orders are gone, and gatherings begin once more.

In summary: you can have fun with fashion and play dress-up, even for times as epic as your ceremony.

Less is more

As matrimonies have become more improvised and informal during the pandemic, so do the wedding dresses. You can anticipate seeing simplistic and unembellished styles continue to trend for wedding dresses in 2022.

Going big used to be about all-over lace, beading, and thread work, this year production was hindered by the pandemic and embroidery virtuosi abroad were made to stay home. Designers took to represent themselves with a less is more ethos, in forms that are no less of a statement. Minimalism doesn’t mean dull. Fancy details like pockets, subtle appliqués, or a cowl neckline add a sartorial flair to your dress without the fuss.

For the bride who chooses distinct lines, sleek shapes, and compositional details, this minimalistic look is all about the cut, styling, and flawless tailoring. Minimalism has earned the rightful place in the bridal fashion space.

Transitional pieces

Adaptability has been the life for all of us over the last year. We’re expecting that mindset to shift over into bridal fashion attire throughout 2022.

If you’re in the market for two looks but don’t want to splurge on two different gowns, you’re in luck. Transitional pieces (think: capes, capelets, toppers, and coats) appear in designer collections everywhere. Pssst: These versatile add-ons are also an excellent choice if you’ve rescheduled your nuptials for chillier months and require a wedding-worthy coverup.

Transitional pieces have been anticipated to be a massive trend for the coming years. The profusion of bridal capes, overskirts, and removable sleeves presents something perfect for brides looking for a two-in-one look. Bridal artists like White One by Pronovias Group, Justin Alexander Signature, and Alexandra Grecco showcased distinct versions of these timeless pieces.

Pastel Tones

Blush was a bridal fashion trend for ages ago; then, it became a mainstay for the aisle, followed by shades of ginger and champagne. Now, we see more fabulous shades of pistachio, dove, lavender, and sky blue in all forms.

From full ball gowns to flirty dresses, Colorful designs, specifically pastel floral prints, and embellishments are turning out to be a significant wedding dress trend for 2022.

Monique Lhuillier, Vera Wang, and Oscar de la Renta lead the calm shades charge; Wang showed lavender (along with touches of red and black, but more on those later). At the same time, Lhuiller’s dove-toned gown joined the ranks of the soft greens she’s been showing as of late. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia’s “something blue” dress for Fall 2020 was an early indication of the color wonders we saw on the 2021 runways. It seems as though these soft tones are here to stay for a feminine yet excellent take on aisle-appropriate color.

These garden-inspired fashions are like wind and fresh air, whether you’re getting married in a garden, Bridgerton-style, or just in pursuit of something unique in an ocean of white wedding dresses. Pastel embroidery, hand-painted details, and dainty floral themes hit the sweet spot between classic bride and full-on risk-taker.

Short Dresses and High Heels

Short wedding dresses have risen in popularity since last year, and they’re still on the path of becoming one of the highest bridal fashion trends in 2022. Whether you want a throw-on-and-go look or you’re in the business for a white dress to wear at a wedding event, there are numerous reasons to rock a shorter hemline. Strut in a thigh-skimming mini wedding dress, or keep it more humble by opting for a midi or tea-length fashion.

Shorter hemlines have forever played a role in a bride’s vesture. Still, this year, as small ceremonies replaced epic 100+ person affairs, brides and designers alike regarded minis, midis, and ankle-lengths suitable for the ceremony—when appropriately styled, of course.

Either way, the point that your feet are not hidden beneath clothing is an excellent reason to celebrate a superb pair of footwear for the big day (especially if you’ve missed wearing heels!).

Bishop Sleeves

Ever since Kate Middleton debuted her charming long-sleeve wedding dress a decade ago, sleeves have earned a massive comeback in the bridal fashion space. They’ll last to trend for the rest of 2021 and into 2022. Still, alternatively tight lace sleeves, billowing and bulky styles will be the expression of the moment. Bishop sleeves are loose for the arm’s length, and fitted at the wrists are the perfect statement feature to try if you’re looking for something distinctive. Depending on the rest of the dress, bishop sleeves will present a bohemian, vintage, or Jungle fairy vibe.
